The Western Cape is South Africa's principal fine-wine region, where sunny Mediterranean-influenced vineyards and cooler coastal breezes help produce ripe, expressive reds. Pinotage is a distinctly South African grape, developed from Pinot Noir and Cinsault in 1925, and is especially at home here.
Barista is a deliberately contemporary expression of Pinotage created by winemaker Bertus Fourie. Grapes harvested at optimum ripeness from selected Western Cape vineyards are fermented in stainless-steel tanks, with regular pump-overs to encourage colour and flavour extraction. Selected oak maturation for approximately five months adds the coffee, mocha and spice complexity associated with the wine.
The coffee-and-chocolate character makes this a fun introduction to Pinotage. Serve at 16–18°C and try it with crispy pork belly, smoky barbecue or even a richly topped pizza. The wine's ripe fruit and soft tannins balance savoury, chargrilled flavours.
